  My Witness

Vol. 10, No. 1, January, 2005

From the Editor
Sr. Jan Nattermann, S.N.C.

Sister Jan Since hope is the power that keeps us stable in the midst of hardship, I want to continue sharing some thoughts on this topic.

"In hope he (Abraham) believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations; as he had been told, 'So shall your descendants be.' He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead because he was about a hundred years old, or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb.

No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised" (Romans 4:18-21).

Abraham looked at his situation. He didn't ignore the reality--his body was old and Sarah's womb was barren. Although, it would be natural to loose hope, Abraham hoped in faith. He was positive about a very negative situation.

You might be thinking, "If you know what is going on in my life, you wouldn't expect me to be positive." No doubt about it. It is difficult to be positive when everything seems to be collapsing.

And yet, Abraham had hope in the promise of God, even in spite of his circumstances. We, too, can take hope in this word of God to us: ... "that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).

Remember, this passage does not say that everything is good, but that all things work together for good. The Lord will work for your good with His perfect plan.
