God Will Provide
by Sr. Brigid Meierotto, S.N.C.

Sister Brigid In this teaching, we will accept the word of God, the Scriptures into our hearts and minds, letting them be light to us. The Scriptures are the inspired word of God which has the power to accomplish what it says, for us. Yes, for us, right here. right now!

The Scripture we are reflecting upon is Gen. 13:14-18; 15:1-6; 22:1-14; Rom. 8:28-39. Read these passages slowly, prayerfully.

As you read the Scripture, in your heart ask the Holy Spirit to explain to you the message that the Lord has for you personally. Do not doubt that the Lord Jesus will do this for you, because that is why he came, so that you can get to know and to love Jesus. "These things I have spoken to you, while I am still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you" (John 14:25f). Ask the Holy Spirit what you expect from him...something like this: "O Holy Spirit, Jesus said that you would teach me all things and I believe him. Teach me that the Lord will see me through! Teach me that the Lord is faithful, that he keeps his promises! Teach me to love Jesus with my whole heart, giving him praise and adoration with every breath! Thank you, O Holy Spirit."

God promised Abraham that his descendents would be as many as the stars in the sky and the dust on the earth. Abraham and Sarah were very aware that there was a big obstacle to having this promise of the Lord fulfilled. They not only had no children, but Sarah had passed the age of child-bearing.

But, Abraham believed the Lord and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness ( Gen. 15:6).

The Lord will see us through! The Lord is faithful -- when he says that he is going to do something -- he will do it! So the Lord expects that we trust him; that we believe in his love, his mercy, his care, his promise. Our Father asks that we have a willing heart to obey his voice, to obey his commands -- even when it seems unreasonable, even when it seems impossible -- because nothing is impossible with the Lord!

The Lord kept his promise to Abraham, and Sarah bore a son, Isaac. But what does the Lord ask of Abraham now? Sacrifice Isaac to the Lord. Sacrifice the only chance for Abraham to have any descendents.

Did the Lord want Abraham's son sacrificed? No. God was testing Abraham. What the Lord wanted from Abraham was trust, faith, belief -- a willing and obedient heart. The Lord called Abraham as he was ready to sacrifice his son, and he said:

"Do not lay your hand on the lad or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me."

And the Lord himself provided a ram for the sacrifice. So Abraham called the name of that place "The Lord will provide."

Yes! When we put our trust in the Lord, the Lord will provide -- he sees our need and he will provide!

As Paul says in Romans 8, "If God is for us, who is against us? ...He gave up his own Son for us, will he not give us all things besides?" The Lord has already given us life -- his Son Jesus dies, rises from the dead, pouring out his Spirit, giving us life -- making us children of the Father. The Lord will see us through, the Lord will provide!

Closing prayer: Thank you, Spirit of love, for teaching me that the Lord will see me through! Thank you for teaching me that the Lord is faithful, that he keeps his promises! Continue to teach me to love Jesus with my whole heart, giving him praise and adoration with every breath! Thank you, O Holy Spirit."

Now the prayer to Mary: "Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus! Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen!"
