Sr. Jan Nattermann, S.N.C.

Sister Jan Evangelization presents us with a basic challenge: hope. We wonder how it is possible to have fulfilled within us a new heart and a new spirit (Ez 36: 26-28) when we experience so often, a heart of stone. We wonder how there can be power in powerlessness. We wonder how justice can reign in the midst of evil. We wonder how there can be light in the midst of our darkest hours. We wonder how life can come from death. Instead of knowing life to the full as Jesus wills for us (Jn. 10:10), complacency, conformity and indifference permeate our society.

In the dark we remain until we enter into Jesus Christ, into His ways and attitudes as the gospels and the faith of the Church proclaim. But even this has its problems. A Christ suited to our own liking or fancy, is so often what we desire, believe in and give to others. Ongoing evangelization is what is needed by you and me. Simply stated: our ideas of Christ need to be purified, refined in the fire (Sir. 2:5). Belief in the true, undistorted Christ guarantees that the Christ we share with others will be true.

What Christ do you and I believe in and give to others? The Beatitudes (Mt. 5:3-12) show us the true face of Jesus the Evangelizer and reveal who enters His kingdom. They tell us how to become hopeful and they call us to adopt the attitudes of Jesus if our evangelization is to be credible.

Let our hope be in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is faithful to His promises. Let our hope be in the Holy Spirit who has been given to us as an empowering force so that we might live a new life. Let our hope be in a credible, evangelized body of witnesses. Let our hope be in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ!
