My Story of Christ in Me
By Omar Delgado

My Story of Christ in Me "This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the means by which our Sins are forgiven" (1 John 4:10).

My name is Omar Delgado. Born in Mexico, the son of a very religious woman, I was raised Catholic along with my ten brothers and sisters. My mother made sure that I received the sacraments and went to Mass almost every Sunday; but I never really felt close to the Lord. When I was seventeen, my mother passed away - after that I seldom went to Church.

In coming to the United States at twenty-one years of age I met and married my wife. We are now blessed with three children. During the first few years of our marriage I spent all of my time either working or drinking with my friends. After several years of this way of living I began to feel spiritually empty. I felt a necessity to know the Lord, to find a purpose for my life and so I began to search. Jesus says, "Repent, the kingdom of God is at hand" (Matthew 3:2).

At a Life in the Spirit Retreat weekend offered by the Sisters of the New Covenant, I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior. The same Holy Spirit that I had received at Baptism and Confirmation was released within me, and my life began to change.

Even though I am a sinner, I know that God loves me and I praise and thank Him for His love every day. Constantly I think about Him. I enjoy going to Mass and experience peace and forgiveness when I receive the Eucharist. Through the Scriptures, the Lord is revealing Himself to me; I know that my task is to follow in His footsteps - to die to myself in the daily situations of my life, and to serve Him with all my heart and strength.

As head of my household I am responsible to God for the spiritual as well as the financial well-being of my family. My commitment to my marriage has been strengthened because of my commitment to Jesus Christ. As a husband I am called to love my wife as Christ loved the Church. My relationship with my wife has changed because Jesus is at the center of our marriage.

Because the Lord has given me compassion, patience, and understanding, my interaction with my children is now different. Instead of going out drinking with my friends I spend time with my children, trying to teach them and show them, by my example, how to live a good Christian life.

Before I knew the Lord I didn't think that I needed anyone. I thought that I could take care of everything myself. The Lord has shown me that I need the support of others. As members of the Church, we are all brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, children of our heavenly Father and have the task of sharing our faith with others. My wife and I are now sharing our faith with others as Companions of the Sisters of the New Covenant, whose mission is evangelization.

Having found a purpose for my life, I look forward to the years ahead and to the opportunities that God will give me to share His forgiving love with others.
